U.S. ELECTRICAL GRID IS VULNERABLE TO CYBERTHREATS

Cyber criminals have been extending wings to cause tremendous distractions. The future of these cybercrimes is predicted to be much worse that we could ever imagine. Recently, the United States' electrical grid has been reported to be vulnerable to disruptive attacks by computer hackers that could shut off power to vital sectors of the economy and key public utilities, giving potential adversaries a new way of hitting the United States, according to a new study by a Washington think tank.

The "REPORT" by the nonpartisan Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress comes as lawmakers on Capitol Hill consider legislation that would beef up cybersecurity standards for critical infrastructure like the power grid while also encouraging the government and private sector to share more information about cyberthreats and thwarted attacks. That legislation has been in the works for years but has been blocked by business interests that see mandatory security standards as an improper attempt by Washington to dictate how companies manage privately owned facilities in industries ranging from telecommunications to the financial and transportation sectors.

Cyberattacks on the power grid have long been seen as a kind of doomsday scenario that could cripple large swaths of the U.S. economy and society, leading to lengthy power outages and wide-scale panic. The new report identifies a range of potential cyberattackers that have both the motive and the capability to take down portions of the power grid, from countries like China and Russia to terrorist organizations and organized criminals.

"For countries like Iran and North Korea, grid vulnerabilities serve as targets for attacks aimed at disruption or asymmetric effects in terms of national, economic, and civil security," the report's authors write, referring to the idea that a country that will always be outmatched militarily by the United States will look for unconventional ways to attack. Cyberweapons, which can include malicious programs written by individual hackers, offer just such a relatively cheap and easier way of hitting the United States.

CYBERCRIMES IN GHANA SEEMS TO GET OUT OF CONTROL

In a recent writing, I mentioned about the rise of cybercrimes in Ghana. I mentioned about Ghana Vice-President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur who has urged ISPs to put in place effective measures to combat internet fraud, amid rapidly increasingly cybercrime. Full Detail on this can be read "HERE".

Barely two weeks after Ghana Vice-President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur called on young people not to get involved in illegal internet activities, police arrested a 26-year-old undergraduate student for allegedly defrauding many people through a bogus online organisation that 'provided' foreign scholarships to Ghanaian students.

Nine days later, police caught six alleged cybercriminals from Nigeria for possessing letterheads of the Presidency, Interior Ministry, High Court and other state institutions, which they reportedly used to defraud people.

Towards the end of June,a group of suspected cybercriminals in the old suburb of Adabraka in the capital Accra, where they operate from a rundown building spoke with one of the online media.

While two of these young men - all unemployed graduates - said they owned an online accommodation agency, one said he was a travel agent who helped people to get foreign visas. The fourth also unknowingly bared his soul to one of the online media, saying he was an oil and gold broker.

ACROSS INDIA CYBERCRIMES HAS GROWN TO OVER 50 %

Recently we witness some shocking reports showing rapid increase of cybercrimes. One of the report shows QATAR has been one of the leading target of cybercrime this year. Despite of the initiatives taking places across countries there are still some countries with huge number of cybercrime cases, one of them is India where by the rise of cybercrime has increased to over 50%  this year.

Cybercrimes registered under the IT Act shot up by over 50% across India between 2012 and 2013, shows the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The maximum offenders came from the 18-30 age group. Among states, the highest incidents of cybercrime took place in Maharashtra (907) followed by Uttar Pradesh (682) and Andhra Pradesh (651).

The maximum arrests for cybercrimes under the IT Act took place in Maharashtra: 426. Andhra Pradesh was a distant second with 296 arrests. Uttar Pradesh was third at 283 arrests.

In percentage terms, the state that saw the most dramatic increase in cases registered under the IT Act was Uttarakhand at 475% (from 4 cases to 23); Assam a close second with 450% (from 28 cases to 154). Interestingly, the picture postcard union territory, Andaman and Nicobar islands, registered an eye-popping increase of 800% (two cases in 2012 to 18 in 2013) in the same category.

Trends in the report show that the maximum cases of cybercrimes in 2013 were for "hacking with computer systems". Transmission of obscene messages, or "obscene publication/transmission in electronic form" came a distant second in the category.
